Week 10 and Interview with Janelle Lara

Updated: Sep 23, 2018

Hi mamas and welcome to Week 10 of your journey!

This week, baby is the size of a prune or kumquat and weighs in at less than a quarter of an ounce. She has reached the beginning of what’s known as the fetal period and is no longer considered an Embryo, so congratulations on hitting this milestone!. The fetal period is when baby’s tissues and organs are rapidly evolving and growing, not to mention a laundry list of other developments. Tiny finger and toe nails are forming, webbing between fingers and toes has disappeared, bones and cartilage are forming and tiny elbows are already working and bending. Tiny tooth buds are forming under the gums, but won’t make their grand appearance until 6-12 months. Your sweet little one is covered in peach fuzz like hair and baby boys are starting to produce testosterone.

At your next, or maybe it’s your first, prenatal visit, and every appointment after that, you will be able to hear baby’s tiny heartbeat. The first time you hear baby’s heartbeat can be a little emotional. I know I got teary eyed for each of my kid’s first appointments. If it is your first appointment with an OB, you will likely get an ultrasound done that will show a tiny, gummy bear looking figure inside your uterus.

From my experience, this first ultrasound is done using a transvaginal ultrasound machine, which means, you get undressed from the waist down and the doctor inserts a probe into your vagina. This allows doctors to check the placement of the pregnancy, to rule out ectopic pregnancies, along with a ton of other things they’re checking at that first ultrasound, including your estimated due date!
